Why Carotene precursors are safe

Let's talk about Vitamin A – a crucial nutrient for our bodies at every stage of life, from a little baby growing in the womb to our older years. It supports eyesight, reproduction, growth and body maintenance, and even our immune system.

Vitamin A comes in two forms: Preformed and as Carotene precursors.

Preformed Vitamin A is the biologically active form. It can be found in supplements and foods like liver. Too much Vitamin A can cause harm to your unborn baby.

Important tip: If you are pregnant and want to avoid risks to your little one you should never take supplements with preformed Vitamin A and must avoid eating liver products.

So, what is a safe source of Vitamin A?

Carotenes are a safe form of Vitamin A. They can be found in supplements (e.g. as Mixed Carotenes) and in fruits, veggies and oils. They are safe because your body will only convert as much Vitamin A it needs from carotenes into the active form.

Optivance products only use carotenes (as Mixed Carotenes) so this means no worries about overdoing your Vitamin A!!

You can spot foods containing carotenes by their vibrant colours – think pumpkin, capsicum, carrots, or those leafy greens like spinach and kale. Yum!

While Vitamin A deficiency isn't common in developed countries, it's good to keep an eye on your intake, especially if you're not big on fruits and veggies. That’s why kids in particular can be at higher risk. Certain conditions like coeliac disease can also lead to deficiencies because they can mess with how our bodies absorb nutrients.

Oh, and here's a fun fact: Cooking up carrots and adding a drizzle of olive oil can actually boost the absorption of carotenes. Double win!

At Optivance, safety is our top priority. That's why all our products only contain Vitamin A in the super-safe carotene form.
