Folic Acid is needed in higher levels during pregnancy when it plays a vital role in reducing the risk of neural tube defects*.
While the importance of folic acid is well understood, unfortunately between 50% - 60% of the population has a genetic variance (i.e. a polymorphism) that impairs the conversion of supplemental folic acid to its active form; L-methylfolate. This means it is unlikely they gain the full benefit of consuming supplemental folic acid aimed at reducing the risk of fetal neural tube defects.
Recognising this, we include the activated form of Folic Acid. (ie Calcium L-Methylfolate) to ensure the risk of fetal neural tube defects is minimised.
